Top 10 Unsolved Mysteries

There are many mysteries in the world, some more captivating than others. We gave gathered some of the most famousTop 10 Unsolved Mysteries enigmas that have traveled the world and still were left without an answer.

#10 - The D.B. Cooper Heist

Dan Cooper (aka D.B. Cooper) embarked on the Northwest Orient Flight 305 on Thanksgiving Eve in 1971 leaving Portland for Seattle. During the flight, the flight attendant received a note from Dan which said “I have a bomb in my briefcase. I will use it if necessary. I want you to sit next to me. You are being hijacked.” When the plan landed, he received $200,000 and four parachutes, the passengers were released and D.B. took the plane. He jumped into a storm and he was never heard from again.

#9 - The Black Dahlia Murder

The police found on January 15, 1947 the naked body of a woman cut in half at the waist, on her back, her arms raised over her shoulders, and her face and body slashed viciously. This was the body of 22-year-old Elizabeth Short (aka Black Dahlia), a woman that was trying to land a role in the movie business. Considered a sex crime and becoming one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the era, police claimed that the murder was comitted by Jack Anderson Wilson (aka Arnold Smith) but this was never proven.

#8 -  The Bermuda Triangle

This is without a doubt one of the greatest cases that puzzled mankind in the 20th century. This is the place where tens of ships and airplanes literally disappear . The size of the area has been estimated to range from 500,000 to 1.5 million square miles. Some say this phenomena is due to magnetism, while others blame it on extraterrestrial activity or human error. The certain thing is that the area is famous for extremely unusual weather.

 #7 - Loch Ness

Dividing the North of Scotland along a line from Fort William to Invernes, the Loch Ness lake hosts another great puzzling mystery. Its deepest point measures 813 feet and it contains more fresh water than England and Wales combined. The main attraction is the Loch Ness Monster (aka Nessie). Many people reported seeing it but its existence was never clearly proven. In October 1987, 20 cruisers used sonar equipment to look for signs of Nessie but they only came up with fish to feed a village.

#6 - The Kennedy Assassination
The murder of John F. Kennedy remains a great enigma especially to Americans. They accept the fact that the murder was committed by a man but no one has come up with the killers. Was the Mob trying to get even for his affair with Miss Monroe or was the crime committed by Cuban assassins? Most of the people do not accept the Government’s version, that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. This is one of the mysteries that remains to be the greatest shame on American intelligence.

#5 -  The Stonehenge Ruins

2m west of the town of Amesbury, Wiltshire, in Southern England, earth, timber and stone structures built and revised over a period of 1,400 years can be found. Stonehenge began to be constructed over 4,000 years ago by the the people of the Neolithic period. However, no one knows exactly what drove these people to build this magnificent construction. Was it religion, astronomy or an unknown influence came from outside the Earth? While the mystery remains uncovered, Stonehenge remains a sacred place, subject of many stories and fascinating millions of people.

#4 - The Shroud of Turin

The Shroud of Turin is an ancient linen cloth that bears the image and profile of a crucified man.  Some would say that that man is Jesus Christ while others claim this is merely a medieval forgery or a clever hoax perpetrated by an artist. Along with modern science, this object has been studies extensively but no clear answer was given.

#3 - Atlantis City

Plato stirred this mystery along with Timaeus and Critias, the ones behind the theory about the lost city. The dialogues were inspired by catastrophic events, leading to the destruction of the Minoan civilization on Crete and Thera. There is a possibility that a richer and more advanced civilization could have existed in the Atlantic Ocean circa 9,000 B.C. The only written records of the city have been found in Timaeus and Critias; many suggest the city could have been located around the Azores Islands, these being the top of some mountains belonging to the sunken continent of Atlantis.

#2 - Aliens

E.T. and his bunch are among the most famous mysteries of our time and subject to many speculations. The Roswell Incident and Area 51  are the place where a big part of this enigma started.  Many sightings have been reported but no one knows what exactly is out there. One thing is certain: The universe is too vast and Earth is too small for us to be alone.

#1 - God

God’s existence is the biggest of our world’s mysteries. People have used God to explain things greater than them or even made up their own Gods. Events in the past showed us that people assume a certain social phenomena to be God’s will and become convinced this is the only way. The Zeitgeist documentary dedicates a third of its time to cleverly explaining what exactly is “God”.

Persistence of “comforting” or traditional explanations are pseudo-explanations which defy logic and counter-evidence due to credulity and religious myth.

There’s no excuse for stupidity, despite it’s long shelf life.

  2. When we say something has been “disproved” or “proved”, this means little. I have seen the issue of the Shroud “proved” and “disproved” several times over the years. All that this means is that for now, the preponderance of credible evidence seems to indicate X [is}[is not] true. Given a few more years, and perhaps some new evidence, and the “proof” will go the other way.

You might begin to ask what difference it makes whether any of these things is proved/disproved. There isn’t much to be done about any of these thing - Stonehenge will continue to exist; the Bermuda Triangle will continue as before, either sucking up hapless travelers, or ignoring them; the Shroud will continue to attract tourists, even if someone “proves” it to be a fake. Those who want to believe will continue to believe; those who want to disbelieve will carry on - each, without regard to the evidence.

Few enough people approach these phenomena with the idea that they simply don’t know, and are willing to look at the evidence. Most come with preconceptions - they investigate in order to confirm their beliefs. The faithful gather evidence to support their faith; the unbelievers approach the evidence with the intent to “debunk” the issue.

It is no more foolish (nor any less foolish) to blindly believe in these things, than it is to blindly reject them. The fact is, we simply don’t know what the truth is most of the time. The problem is, we don’t like to admit that - so we choose some belief, and doggedly insist on it without much regard for evidence that undermines those beliefs.

  3. Love your top 10

There has been a recent breakthrough regarding the DB Cooper case. On inside edition, they interviewed two men, who investigated the case for 7 years, and uncovered a suspect the FBI passed over in error. In addition, a local affiliate, KOIN TV in Portland, did a report on the same suspect. Both shows are available on the net, via youtube, and I also saw something on Wikipedia.

Many times, we look at unsolved mysteries, and try to make them much more difficult to solve than need be. For instance, the Cooper case, was simply a local skydiving instructor, who tricked the FBI agent, by calling him within two hours after Cooper had jumped.

I must say, I was stumped as to how Cooper could land, get to a phone to call the FBI, all within two hours. Then, Ted Mayfield explains in the piece, that one could easily bail out within a pre-determined area, by simply doing simple math, knowing the route, the mileage, the speed of the aircraft, etc. Not to mention, the possible use of walkie-talkies to have an accomplice pick you up after the jump.

I think, we as a society, only want to believe in conspiracies, when in reality, most unexplained mysteries, are simply due to human error, such as the secret service not restricting access to high rise windows in the Kennedy case, and in the Cooper case, a FBI agent making assumptions, that simply weren’t true.
